Changing lives, one innovation at a time

Challenge

The sheep rearing sector is an important, but unorganised sector, with many rearers being nomadic and unable to enjoy a decent quality of life

Solution

A business model that structures the sheep rearing process. Rearer incomes increase and stablilize as well-cared-for sheep fetch higher market prices.

Challenge

Poor artisans in rural areas are not able to market their products effectively and therefore get inadequate earnings.

Solution

A system that links rural handicraft artisans to urban markets, through a remote oursourcing model. For more details, visit www.ropeinternational.com

Challenge

The cost of kerosene in the open market is too high for a large portion of the rural population to afford.

Solution

A stove that is not reliant on kerosene alone. It circumvents kerosene's reduced availability, cost and surrounding health concerns.

Challenge

Cereals, coriander and chillies are ground in a flour mill machine that consumes a lot of energy. Also, there are chances of adulteration due to friction in the machine.

Solution

A pulveriser that ensures a higher quality of flavour for oily foods (such as chillies and coriander), at a low price

Challenge

Sprinklers currently available suffer from a lot of wear and tear, calling for frequent replacement, the cost of which burdens the poor.

Solution

A low-cost sprinkler with no moving parts. Less wear and tear greatly reduces maintenance costs.

Challenge

Farmers toil with pests that have become resistant to pesticides, as well as soil deficient in potassium and badly affected by the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers.

Solution

A pesticide-fertilizer formulation that deals with soil and pest problems, while saving farmers up to 50% of input costs.

Challenge

There are no weeders to suit the agricultural conditions for crops like sugarcane and maize. This is further worsened by a shortage of labour

Solution

An affordable weeder that can deal with closely spaced commercial crops, allowing for greater agricultural productivity and increased income for farmers.

Challenge

Farmers regularly lose income due to bovine mastitis, and don't have the money or expertize to use conventional testing kits.

Solution

An easy-to-administer and inexpensive kit for the early detection and prevention of mastitis in cattle.

Challenge

Farmers struggle with bacteria and viruses that infect their poultry and have become immune to synthetic medicines.

Solution

A herbal product that is able to control the growth and spread of bacteria and viruses.

Challenge

Rural hospitals cannot afford to purchase or maintain traditional incubators or infant warmers.

Solution

A low-cost, easy-to-maintain baby warmer for newborns in rural hospitals.

Challenge

An asymmetry exists between industry needs and a large unemployed rural workforce.

Solution

A business model that provides employment (and related skills, income and social standing) to the rural populace. It also enables village-level entrepreneurs to start their own businesses.

Challenge

Machines available in the market are expensive and are out of reach of brick kiln owners

Solution

It provides an affordable solution for mechanisation of the brick making process
